 At the American President’s Desk


I came across this photo today: the leaders of Europe gathered inside the Oval Office. Men and women who represent multi-trillion-dollar economies, together governing over 500 million people. The heirs of the Renaissance, of Enlightenment, of centuries of art, literature, philosophy, and technological progress.


And yet, here they sit at the American President’s desk, waiting to hear what assignment he will set for their future. Power, prestige, and history—all momentarily dwarfed by Washington’s authority.


Meanwhile, in the Middle East, our economies are pushed into the footnotes of global reports under the label “others.” We don’t even control the operating systems of the televisions we assemble, yet we declare—sometimes with pride, sometimes with anger—“Who is America to decide for us?” For over a century, this cry has echoed, while our leaders remain trapped between defiance and dependence.


The image is striking: Europe listens, the Middle East resists. But in the end, both are caught in the orbit of Washington’s desk.and finally, Which leaders are more intelligent and forward-thinking for their people?
